Review of BattleBlock Theater

In BattleBlock Theater, you and your friends are captured and imprisoned, and the only way you can free yourself is to complete levels and rescue your friends for the entertainment of your jailers. While the game starts off with a dark storyline, its combated by cartoon-like graphics and a narrator who's smart, sarcastic, and funny.

The game is a pretty typical platforming game. You jump over obstacles, attack enemies, and search for secret passageways for special items you can use to upgrade your character. Like all platforming games, there are timed levels that you must complete before the clock hits zero, but most of the levels allow you to take as much time as you want.

The big draw of BattleBlock Theater is that you have to rely on your partner to complete levels. Unlike Mario or Rayman games where your partner can float in a bubble while you complete the level, completing a level in BattleBlock Theater without your partner is impossible. You and your partner rely on each other to navigate through levels, tossing each other to areas unreachable by jumping, and helping each other cross difficult paths by taking turns holding down switches that temporarily stop dangerous items.

In this way, BattleBlock Theater feels more like a puzzle game than a traditional platform game. Instead of rushing though levels, you take your time, look for secrets, and discover different ways to use your skills and the skills of your partner to work your way through the game together. You're never doing separate things in different parts of the game—you’re always playing together.

The only disappointing aspect of BattleBlock Theater is that only two players can play through the story mode. Up to four players can fight to the end in PVP battle mode, but the four-player capability doesn't extend to campaign mode. However, if you have more than two people who are interested in playing the story mode, you can always take turns playing levels to enjoy the game as a group. The levels are pretty brief, so no one will be without a controller for too long.

If you enjoy platforming games, BattleBlock Theater is an excellent addition to your collection. It's great for unwinding after a long day at work, and because it doesn't require your full attention, it allows you to enjoy both a game and a conversation.
