Review of Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime pleases all of the senses. The characters, enemies, and storyline are all adorable, the art and neon colors of the game are pleasing to look at, and the game’s music is peppy and fun.

The premise of the game is simple: rescue some bunnies and save the universe. To do so, you fly a spaceship through different types of terrains, each of which has its own unique obstacles. In some terrains, you must navigate narrow passageways. If you bump into a wall, you take damage. In others, you float through water, avoid major explosions, or get locked in rooms with dangerous enemies.

Enemies are everywhere in this game. While you can choose to run from them at times, you mostly have to take them out with one of the many guns on your spaceship. As you progress through levels, you can upgrade your guns to make them more powerful, and you can also upgrade your ship if you rescue enough bunnies.

The basic mechanics of the game are simple, but executing them becomes more and more difficult as the game progresses. Each person you're playing with can only operate one station at a time, and every ship has multiple stations: a station for driving the ship, a station for using the shield to block attacks, an ultimate weapon station, and multiple gun stations.

The guns on your ship only reach so far, so you'll find yourself running in a panic from station to station to move your ship, block attacks, and take out enemies on opposite sides of the ship.

Working together is essential for success in the game. Even with four players, there will be more stations than everyone can manage, so you have to strategize in order to stay alive and beat the enemies. If you don’t have a good plan for how to work together, you’ll inevitably fail, and if anyone makes a mistake, everyone pays for it. That can lead to moments of shared triumph and grudges alike.

Even though the game can get stressful, it's a wonderful family game. Even young children can have fun playing the game—put them on a simple station like the shield, and they can assist without having too much responsibility. The colors of the game, the premise, the music, and the excitement are all worth the occasional moments of stress, especially since you'll all be experiencing them together.
